Cannes Advertising Festival

Wohhoo!!
"...All teams worked on a simple brief to a complicated product, the stem cell harvest and storage services of the Medical City's Stem Bank. The final output was to be a 30-second video, using original footage, and produced practically overnight.

Team Leo Burnett, composed of Diosmarino Gupana II and John Paul Cuison, was awarded Gold for their spot, affectionately called by judges as "Cancer the Musical." In the video, a young man sings joyously of his recent diagnosis of liver cancer, more than confident that he'll recover because he has stem cells squirreled away in Medical City.

Both young men will fly to Cannes, to compete in the Young Lions Film shootout this June. This will be Cuison's second chance at bat in the Young Lions, where he took part with then-partner Cey Enriquez in 2006."

"CANCER THE MUSICAL"

Let me borrow this article from http://www.adobomagazine.com/global/module.php?LM=news.level1&id=1271264692780

Leo Burnett, BBDO Guerrero/Proximity & Ace Saatchi & Saatchi win Young Kidlat competition

Thirty-six hours after they were briefed, 24 teams of creatives under the age of 30 returned with some of the best work the Young Kidlat has seen. Nevertheless, only Teams Leo Burnett, BBDO Guerrero/Proximity and Ace Saatchi & Saatchi were deemed most worthy of representing the country in the Young Lions in Cannes, France and Young Lotus in Pattaya, Thailand.

All teams worked on a simple brief to a complicated product, the stem cell harvest and storage services of the Medical City's Stem Bank.

This will be Cuison's second chance at bat in the Young Lions, where he took part with then-partner Cey Enriquez in 2006.

Team BBDO Guerrero/Proximity--Timothy Villela and Rizza Delle Garcia--received Silver for their trouble. Their video tells the story of a transplant patient, who receives an organ donated by a pig.

They, too, will fly to Cannes and compete in the Young Lions Cyber competition.

Team Ace Saatchi & Saatchi (Mark Peckson and Patrick Miciano) initially received bad news on the day of the briefing, when it was discovered that Peckson was already 29 years old. Organizers allowed them to proceed, on the condition that they would only be eligible for participation in the Young Lotus shootout, where the cutoff is 30 years of age.

As luck would have it, their video, on the reversal of the ill effects of cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and cholesterol-rich, food was judged worthy of a Bronze, and tickets to Pattaya this May.

Historically, the Creative Guild of the Philippines sends one pair to Cannes and another to Adfest. This year, the organizers of the Young Lions expanded their invitation to a second team, this time in the Cyber Young Lions. The second Young Lions team is sponsored by Ayala Land.

PUNNX KOMIX launch-esque @ UPLB Comic-con (Komikstrip)

It was a success! Thank you very much to all the people that helped us solidify our ideas (hehehe solidify, me-ganun?). We're doing this as a tribute to Funny Comics as mentioned on our previous blog. Thanks to everyone who bought our KOMIX, who took a picture and asked for an autograph.. It was all flattering and overwhelming for me and Dennis.

Now, because of all the support, we were encouraged to secure a space at the UP Diliman Summer Komikon this coming April 17 where we are planning to launch PUNNX 2!

Also, selling our KOMIX at Sputnik is already on the works.

We are hoping for your continuous support not only to PUNNX KOMIX but also to the local indie comics scene.

Cheers!

BERLIN MANALAYSAY ON "PUNNX KOMIX"

When I was a kid, I can honestly say I was the biggest fan of Funny Komiks. I’ve always been fascinated by the humor of the writers/artists specially Mr. Berlin Manalaysay. His bit, Combatron is usually the one I’m looking forward to read and laugh about in Funny Komiks. I grew up idolizing this man behind the amazing Combatron! Now, almost 2 decades later, together with my friend Dennis Nierra, We’re starting to do our very own KOMIX. One of the stories inside is highly influenced by my favorite artist/writer Mr. Berlin Manalaysay. As I was telling my Facebook friends about my new gig, “PUNNX KOMIX” (shameless plugging: Available at KOMIKSTRIP, UPLB) I came across the name of my idol, Berlin Manalaysay! I immediately IM’ed him and told him about my parody of Combatron. I was surprised how accepting he was of my idea. Now I can proudly say, I have the blessing of the creator or Combatron himself to parodize his masterpiece. Thank you very much sir!! =)

The most ridiculous komix in the universe!!

I grew up reading Funny Comics. Each Friday, I bought a new issue—without fail. And though I was still so young, I already dreamt of being an artist then.

Fast forward to a couple of years later, and now I’m big, or rather, old enough to stop playing and running to the store every Friday for my comic fix, and start working. But the influence of these comics on the work I do, are undeniable. That’s why I feel the need to ‘give back’.

As they say, those that are spoofed or made parodies of, are already MADE—they have reached a certain stature worthy of being, more than emulated, transformed or pushed to the boundaries of their entertainment value (if you may). Take for example those songs spoofed by Weird Al and T.V.J., or the events and character sketches shown on S.N.L., MadTV, and Bubble Gang. What we’ve created here, is a tribute to all the comics I grew up on, and all those comic artists who have influenced my style. For me, they’ve MADE it, and they deserve this.

I must tell you that our version may seem like ‘Funny Comics on drugs’. This is how we chose to push Funny to its limit; and may probably be an effect of Comix (please refer to wikipedia for further info) on me. And I do hope that you will have as much fun reading as we did when we created this; because that will be the real tribute to Funny.

You can purchase PUNNX KOMIX this FEB 13 at KOMIKSTRIP ( UPLB FIRST COMIC BOOK CONVENTION). For more info, visit their site CLICK HERE.
